A Kingdom Hearts TV show is officially in the works, and Disney has revealed the first official look at it.
During Disney’s D23 Expo, the upcoming game Kingdom Hearts IV made an unexpected appearance. Along with confirming a 2027 release date for the game, Disney also revealed that a Kingdom Hearts TV show was in the works.
New Kingdom Hearts TV show has original creator involved
The new TV show, an anime series based on the iconic video game franchise, will premiere on both Disney Channel and Disney+. The show was developed in partnership with developer Square Enix, and surprisingly, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura is also involved in the show’s development, according to a Disney Japan post on the matter.
The story will “reimagines the iconic adventure with a brand-new story that will expand on the universe of ‘Kingdom Hearts’ while celebrating the characters that have captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world,” according to Disney.
Nothing else about the TV show was revealed, but Disney did show off a motion poster for the show, which shows off Sora and his Keyblade. The Kingdom Hearts franchise began in 2002, with a highly successful video game for the PlayStation 2 developed by Square Enix.
Since then, the series has spawned off over a dozen games, and became a worldwide phenomenon. The series is best known for mixing the worlds of Disney and Square Enix together, and tells a fairly complex story about Sora and his friends traveling through different worlds inspired by Disney.
