New Delhi, August 16 (IANS). India is going to host the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi on August 18. Before this, on August 17, there will be a meeting of BRICS senior officials of the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development. The event will be organized under the main theme of India's BRICS Chairmanship 'Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainable Development'.
According to an official statement issued on Sunday, the BRICS Environment Ministers' meeting will be chaired by Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav. The meeting will provide a platform for ministers, senior officials, policy-makers and experts from member countries to have meaningful discussions, build consensus and strengthen cooperation in the field of environment.
The first day will see a meeting of senior officials, which will include an inaugural session and discussions on the priorities of the BRICS Environment Working Group, the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development, the statement said.
The second day will conclude with the deliberations on the outcome document at the ministerial level and thematic discussions highlighting the collective commitment of BRICS member states towards environmental cooperation and sustainable development. Under the Chairmanship, India has identified four priority areas for focused activities under the BRICS Environment Working Group.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, under its BRICS 2026 Chairmanship, initiated discussions and deliberations through several virtual meetings, technical sessions, webinars and dialogues from March to July. This includes negotiations on BRICS resource efficiency and circular economy and linking the carbon market with the goals. Apart from this, webinars were also organized on integrated approaches of forest fire management to deal with land degradation, desertification and drought and disasters. These discussions provided an important platform for building consensus and laying the groundwork for face-to-face talks in New Delhi on 17-18 August.
The BRICS Environment Working Group (EWG) was established during the first BRICS Environment Ministers' Meeting held in Moscow in 2015. It was envisioned as a platform for BRICS to address fundamental environmental priorities, exchange experiences, share best practices and strengthen collective action among BRICS member states.
