Devdutt Padikkal has created history. Padikkal, playing only his third Test match, has made a place in the club of stalwarts like Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara. Padikkal scored 167 runs with the help of 15 fours and 1 six in 230 balls in the first Test being played against Sri Lanka in Galle. He has become the third Indian batsman to score 150 plus by coming at number-3 against Sri Lanka in Test cricket.
Earlier, only Dravid and Pujara could achieve this feat. Dravid played an inning of 177 runs in the Ahmedabad Test in 2009. Whereas Pujara had scored 153 runs in the Galle Test in 2017. By coming at number-3, Padikkal has broken Pujara's record in terms of playing the biggest innings in Sri Lanka.
Padikkal confirmed his place at number 3
Padikkal has got a chance due to Sai Sudarshan's injury. Padikkal seized this opportunity with both hands and secured his place at number 3 position by scoring a big century. Even after the return of Sudarshan, only Padikkal will be seen batting in this important position. Batting at number-3, Sudarshan has been able to score only 383 runs in 7 test matches at an average of 31.91. During this period he has not been able to score any century.
India towards big score
With the help of Padikkal's marathon innings, Team India is moving towards a big score. The Indian team has reached near 400 runs. Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar are standing at the crease. Padikkal's wicket was taken by Prabhat Jayasuriya. Yesterday, KL Rahul retired from the field due to injury and was able to add only 5 runs in his innings today. He became the victim of debutant Keshara Nuwantha on a personal score of 82 runs. Nuvantha had earlier taken the wicket of Rishabh Pant (39).
Off-spin all-rounder Nuwantha took his third wicket of Ravindra Jadeja (13). Sri Lanka has used 6 bowlers so far but except Jayasuriya and Nuwantha, all the bowlers have been empty handed.
