Mumbai: Small earthquake tremors being felt continuously in Nashik and Palghar of Maharashtra for the last few days have increased the concern of the people. According to scientists, these tremors that occur repeatedly in the same area within a short period of time are called Earthquake Swarm. According to the available data, 29 seismic events were recorded in Maharashtra between July 30 and August 14.
Where did the earthquake shocks occur?
Of these, 24 tremors were recorded in Nashik and surrounding areas, four in Palghar and one in Nagpur. Their intensity ranged between 2.0 to 4.3 on the Richter scale, while the epicenter of the earthquakes was said to be about 5 to 8 kilometers below the ground. During this period, the strongest tremor occurred in Nashik on August 8, whose intensity was measured at 4.3.
What is Earthquake Swarm?
Usually a big earthquake is followed by many smaller aftershocks. But the situation of Earthquake Swarm is different from this. In this, instead of one big main earthquake, continuous small tremors are felt in a limited area. This activity can continue from a few days to weeks or months.
What is the reason for frequent earthquakes?
According to Professor Dipankar Chaudhary, seismologist of IIT Bombay, the Nashik area is a part of the Deccan Plateau, where basalt rocks are present in large quantities. During monsoon, rain water can reach the cracks and holes of these rocks. This can cause small seismic tremors due to the stress present in the rocks when the pressure of underground water increases. This process is called hydro-seismicity.
Is Mumbai in danger?
Nashik and Palghar fall in Zone-3 under the Indian Standard IS 1893, which is considered an area with moderate seismic risk. According to experts, it is important to keep an eye on the current tremors, but at present there is no immediate possibility of any major earthquake based on them. These tremors coming at shallow depth are weak in traveling far, hence the possibility of their serious impact on Mumbai is said to be less.
