The first day of the match was entirely in the name of India. Yashasvi Jaiswal (32 runs) and KL Rahul put on a 47-run opening partnership to give India a steady start. Devdutt Padikkal came to the crease after Yassav was unfortunately run out. Padikkal and KL Rahul put on a crucial century partnership for the second wicket. Jurel contributed 51 runs off 68 balls with the help of 4 fours and 1 six. Mohammad Sirajan scored 11 runs and Manav Suthar returned to the tent as the eighth and ninth wickets with 24 runs. Left-arm spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka. He took four wickets for 109 runs. Kesara Nuwantha took three wickets, but India posted a solid first innings total of 460 runs.
