Suspicious death of senior TMC leader and former deputy speaker Ashish Banerjee, questions raised on party's functioning

Ashish Banerjee Death Case : Former deputy speaker of West Bengal Assembly and senior Trinamool Congress leader Ashish Banerjee died under suspicious circumstances on Sunday morning. His body was found hanging in the TMC office at Rampurhat in Birbhum district. Police reached the spot and took possession of the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Suicide note found from the spot

Ashish Banerjee lived in Hattalapara area located in Ward No. 5 of Rampurhat. The local office of the party was near his house, where this incident came to light. Police have also found an alleged suicide note from the spot, which is being investigated.

Didn’t take money in political life

In the suicide note, Ashish Banerjee has expressed his displeasure regarding some matters of the party. He wrote that he could not accept all the wrongdoings of the party, but could not oppose them either. He also claimed that he did not take money in return for any work in his entire political career.

In the note he has mentioned some administrative matters including sand tender. He said that he had no role in matters to tenders, plan approvals, NOCs and checks to TRDA (Tarapith-Rampurhat Development Authority). Denying the allegations of corruption, he wrote that no one is responsible for his death and also expressed regret for entering politics.

West Bengal government minister Agnimitra Paul said whether it was suicide or murder would be known only after police investigation. He said that not everyone in Trinamool Congress is wrong and there may be some people who could not express their views.

Service with honesty and simplicity

At the same time, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee expressed grief over the demise of Ashish Banerjee and said that he continued serving people with honesty and simplicity as a teacher and public servant throughout his life. He said that in the last note of Ashish Banerjee, questions have been raised regarding the long-running alleged allegations and attempts to defame him.

Suspicious after seeing rope

Ashish Banerjee had hoisted the tricolor near his house on Saturday on the occasion of Independence Day. He had shared pictures of this program on social media. His brother Prashant Banerjee told that the family became suspicious when a rope was seen near the door in the morning, after which the police was informed.

Also served as Minister of School Education and Agriculture

Prashant Banerjee said that everything was normal till night. Ashish was present in the party office throughout the day and the Independence Day program also took place normally. Ashish Banerjee was among the leaders close to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. After the formation of TMC government in the state, he took charge of many important departments. He had also been the Minister of School Education and Agriculture.

Responsibility of Assembly Deputy Speaker

Ashish Banerjee was elected MLA from Rampurhat Assembly seat for five consecutive times in the years 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021. In the previous government, he also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. However, he had to face defeat from BJP candidate Dhruba Saha in the 2026 assembly elections.

Police engaged in investigation of the entire matter

Earlier on June 2, Ashish Banerjee had resigned from the post of TMC’s Birbhum District President and District Core Committee President. He had said that the core committee was not working effectively and now he would remain in the party only as an ordinary member. Police are investigating the entire matter and the cause of death will become clear after the post mortem report comes.
