Devdutt Padikkal Century: Indian young batsman Devdutt Padikkal has won the hearts of cricket fans with his brilliant batting in the Test match being played in Galle against Sri Lanka. Padikkal, who came in to bat at number three in place of the injured Sai Sudarshan, played a memorable innings of 167 runs and put India in a strong position and also created many historical records in his name.
150+ run partnership with KL Rahul
After winning the toss and batting first, the Indian team got the first blow in the form of Yashwi Jaswal. After Jeswal’s dismissal, Padikkal, who came to the crease at number three, along with KL Rahul, found out the extent of the Sri Lankan bowlers. There was a strong partnership of over 150 runs between the two. Padikkal completed his brilliant century on the very first day of the match.
167 runs scored in 230 balls
On the second day, play started late due to rain, but Padikkal kept up the run-scoring streak. Batting with a lot of control against the spinners, he increased the team’s score. Padikkal played a magnificent innings of 167 runs off 230 balls with the help of 15 fours and 1 six before finally being dismissed by Prabhat Jayasuriya in the 92nd over.
Dravid and Pujara’s entry into the club
Padikkal became only the third Indian batsman to score more than 150 runs while batting at number three in a Test match against Sri Lanka. Earlier, only Rahul Dravid (177 runs, Ahmedabad 2009) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153 runs, Galle 2017) could achieve this feat. Along with this, this has also become the highest individual score of any Indian batsman batting at number 3 on Sri Lankan soil.
This miracle happened after 24 years
Padikkal became only the second left-handed batsman to score the third Test century for India in the 21st century. Earlier, Sourav Ganguly achieved this feat against Zimbabwe in Delhi in 2002.
Also, this is the first century for the Indian team at the No. 3 position after the last 35 Test innings. Earlier in September 2024, Shubman Gill scored his third century against Bangladesh in Chennai.
