How to clean silver jewelry at home: Everyone likes to wear silver jewelry with moon shine. But when it is used regularly, it gradually turns black over time. Exposure to air, moisture and other elements causes a black or yellow coating on silver, which is called tarnish. At such times proper cleaning is required to bring back the luster of the jewelry.

Many people buy expensive cleaners or go to jewelers to shine jewelry. However, silver jewelry can be made shiny again at home with very few tools without any harsh chemicals or excessive scrubbing.

How does this trick work?

This method is based on a natural chemical process. When silver jewelry comes in contact with baking soda and aluminum foil, the black coating that has settled on the silver begins to slowly transfer to the foil. Light bubbles or foaming may be observed during this process, which is an indication that the cleaning process is taking place properly.

What items will be needed for cleaning?

  • Heat-resistant glass or ceramic bowl (bowl)
  • Aluminum foil
  • baking soda
  • boiling water
  • Soft cloth

How to clean silver jewelry

1. First line the bottom of the bowl with aluminum foil with the shiny side facing up.
2. Now place the silver jewelry directly on the foil.
3. Then add 1 to 2 teaspoons of baking soda and pour enough boiling water to completely submerge the jewelry.
4. Leave the jewelry in the water for 5 to 10 minutes.
5. After this take them out carefully and wash them with cold water to remove the baking soda particles and then dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth.
If the desired shine is not achieved the first time, the same process can be repeated again.

Bonus tips

  • After cleaning, gently wipe the silver jewelry with a silver polishing cloth.
  • If the jewelry has engravings or fine designs, it can be gently cleaned using mild dish soap (dishwashing liquid) and a soft brush as needed. This will enhance the shine of the jewelry and make it look brand new.
