Amidst India's growing diplomatic and leadership role on the international stage, the country's capital New Delhi has once again come to the center of global discussions. Before the convening of the upcoming BRICS summit, a very important meeting of Environment Ministers of BRICS countries is going to be held in New Delhi on 18 August 2026. Preparations for this global conference to be chaired by India are in full swing. The main objective of this high-level meeting is to establish a strong collective commitment among the member countries on environmental protection, strategies to deal with climate change and sustainable development goals. It will start with meetings of senior officials. Just before the main meeting of Environment Ministers, meetings of senior officials of the Environment Working Group and Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development have been organized on 17th August. All these sessions are being organized under the main theme of India's BRICS Chairmanship 2026 'Strength, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainable Development'. At the end of the meetings, there is every possibility of issuing a joint statement on important topics like environmental protection and circular economy. The eyes of the world will be focused on these four major issues. This important BRICS conference being held in New Delhi will mainly brainstorm in detail on four major and burning environmental issues: Circular Economy: This issue emphasizes on demonstrating effective waste (waste) management practices by developing a strong 'Extended Producer Responsibility' policy framework and regulatory approach in the member countries. Its main objective is to ensure efficient use and equity of resources. Afforestation and wildfire management: Sharing of advanced data collection, modern monitoring systems and rapid response mechanisms will be considered to deal with incidents of wildfires. A strategy to meet this common challenge will be formed through an integrated green approach. Sustainable Lifestyle: Emphasis will be laid on promoting eco-friendly lifestyle through judicious consumption of natural resources and community practices. Success stories and best practices will also be shared among member countries. Climate Adaptation: This priority focuses on promoting people-centred and community-led climate adaptation efforts based on traditional knowledge, enabling practical cooperation and structured knowledge exchange.
