Airtel has launched a satellite-to-mobile connectivity service in collaboration with Starlink. Eligible customers will receive this service for free for 30 days. It allows users to access essential services even without a standard mobile network. Notably, the company has currently launched this service in Africa through a partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX.

**30-Day Free Trial; WhatsApp and SMS Support**
Eligible Airtel Africa customers can register for this free trial via the MyAirtel app. Initially, the service will support low-data activities, such as WhatsApp messaging and SMS. This feature is currently available on select Android smartphones and is subject to specific terms and conditions. The service is particularly useful in areas lacking conventional mobile network coverage, allowing supported smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites.

**No Need for Satellite Dishes or Separate Devices**
A key feature of this service is that customers do not require a Starlink dish, a satellite phone, or any additional hardware; supported smartphones connect directly to the satellite. However, a clear view of the sky is essential. Service performance may be affected if the user is indoors or if there are obstructions blocking the satellite signal.

According to Airtel Africa, customers in areas with non-terrestrial network coverage can access essential communication services as long as their phones maintain a clear line of sight to the sky. The company has described this launch in the DRC as Africa's first satellite-to-mobile service.

**WhatsApp and SMS During the Free Trial**
During the 30-day trial, eligible customers can use WhatsApp messaging and SMS. However, this should not be mistaken for standard high-speed mobile internet; the service is designed primarily for essential communication and low-data tasks. Airtel has not announced standard voice calling or full mobile broadband capabilities as part of this offer. This means that instead of replacing existing mobile networks, satellite connectivity will complement them in areas where standard network coverage is unavailable.

**Expanding Network Reach in Remote Areas**
Deploying mobile towers and other network infrastructure in remote and sparsely populated regions can be both difficult and costly. Satellite-to-mobile technology can help extend network coverage to such areas without the need to install mobile towers everywhere. Farmers, healthcare workers, relief and humanitarian organizations, personnel in the mining sector, and transport and logistics companies stand to benefit from this.
