In the Test being played between India and Sri Lanka in Galle, Shubman Gill has taken such a catch which has shocked the world cricket. The Indian captain jumped like a leopard on the extra cover and caught Kamindu Mendis before the ball touched the ground, ending the innings. Sri Lankan batsman Mendis could not believe that he was out.
Mendis was trying to play a shot by moving forward on the ball of Kuldeep Yadav but he could not reach the ball. Mendis pushed the ball in the air. Gill, standing at extra cover, jumped to his left and caught the ball just inches above the ground. While taking the catch, Gill's body became almost parallel to the ground but he did not let the ball escape his hand. Mendis was feeling unlucky when he became the victim of this amazing catch by Gill. He returned to the pavilion dejected.
Sri Lanka's innings disintegrated
The Indian team ended at 462, improving on its yesterday's score (460/9). Today Sri Lanka took only 4 balls to take India's last wicket. After this his batting started. Mohammed Siraj got his opener Nishan Madushka (0) caught in the slips by Devdutt Padikkal on the very second ball. After this, Manav Suthar increased the problems of Sri Lanka by taking the wicket of Dinesh Chandimal (4) on his very first ball of the match.
The Sri Lankan team had not even recovered from these shocks when Lahiru Udara (27) played a simple ball from Suthar straight into the hands of backward point. Now Sri Lanka had hopes from Mendis and captain Dhananjay de Silva. This was his most trusted partner. Gill, thanks to his exceptional fielding, soon broke the pair, giving India a stranglehold on the match. Till lunch on the third day of the match (17 August), Sri Lanka's score is 99 runs at the loss of 5 wickets. The host team is trailing India's score by 363 runs.
