In the immortal words of Samuel L. Jackson, hold onto your butts—because McLaren has just teased a car equipped with a manual transmission, and the company plans to unveil it this Friday.

The teaser video released by McLaren on Thursday morning shows a beautifully crafted gear shifter, with the McLaren logo appearing to float inside glass within the knob. There is also a brief look at the striking pedal set—all three pedals, importantly. The accelerator pedal is finished in orange, while the brake and clutch pedals feature a bright metallic finish.

A few more close-up shots from this teaser, along with a second video issued earlier this week, offer glimpses of an exhaust tip framed by carbon fibre, some cherry red paintwork, a fuel filler cap, and a couple of quick looks at the LED lighting, presumably at both the front and rear. Even so, none of these clips provide enough detail to properly identify the car.

What also remains unclear is the exact nature of the manual transmission itself. Is it a genuine manual gearbox, or will it work in a way similar to Ferrari’s simulated manual setup in the 12Cilindri Manuale? There is also the question of which engine it is paired with. The exhaust note heard over the video sounds closest to McLaren’s V-8, but that is far from confirmed.

One thing we are really hoping for, however, is that this is not a one-off build. If Ferrari can justify producing a run of “manual” transmission cars, it would certainly be good to see McLaren respond in kind.

We should get answers to all of those questions on Friday, when McLaren reveals its new mystery car at Monterey Car Week.
