An Eritrean man has been found guilty of raping a pensioner outside a church just meters away from traffic on a main road in the British capital London. Brooke Deslagne, 33, dragged the man behind a hoarding near St John's Church in Harrow (north London) around midnight on July 23 last year and then raped him on a grassy area. A witness saw the 20-minute attack from his window and called the police.

It is being said about the accused that he had taken the help of an interpreter during the trial. He told police in an interview that he was trying to help the victim, who was intoxicated and cannot be named for legal reasons. After being shown the council camera footage, he stopped the interview, spoke to his lawyer and refused to talk further or testify at the trial. Deslagne had carried the man from a bench to a grassy area outside the church to carry out the attack. When officers later arrived, they found him standing behind a church sign, with the victim lying behind him.

Simon Shannon, prosecuting, told Harrow Crown Court: 'You can see the accused dragging the pensioner, who was very drunk, off the bench where he was sitting, and onto a grassy area.' An Eritrean man raped an elderly man on the grass outside St John's Church in Harrow, north London.

no evidence of rape

He said that the footage shows that whenever a civilian passed by, Deslang would stop the attack. Defense lawyer Bibi Ihuomah said there was no evidence the elderly man was raped and asked jurors not to react hastily. During the trial, the accused remained without any emotion and kept drinking water while the footage was shown. Detective Constable Luke Revill said Deslong was a 'dangerous criminal' who 'targeted a defenceless, vulnerable, elderly man'.

Help sought from people in the matter

He was arrested on the spot after the common people alerted the police. The next day charges were framed against him and the court sent him on remand. We are committed to bringing criminals like Deslang to justice. We would urge anyone who has been a victim of a similar crime to contact police. The officers will listen to you and help you.
