The Porsche Taycan may reportedly be on its way out before the end of this decade. As per German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche, the carmaker is planning to end Taycan production by 2030 instead of shifting the model’s manufacturing from Zuffenhausen to Leipzig.
Reuters has also reported the development, although it says the claim comes from WirtschaftsWoche’s sources rather than presenting it as independently verified. Reuters did approach Porsche regarding the report, but a spokesperson declined to comment directly and instead referred to chief executive officer Michael Leiters’s July interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, in which he said there were “no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the short term.”
That phrasing still leaves a wide gap between “not in the short term” and 2030. The report further states that Porsche has dropped its earlier plan to move Taycan production to Leipzig, which would mark a notable shift. At present, the Taycan is produced in Zuffenhausen on a dedicated EV line, while Leipzig manufactures the Macan and Panamera.
Although sales of the electric car have not been especially strong—Porsche built 11,510 Taycans in 2025, down from 21,302 the previous year, according to its annual report—this does not by itself confirm that the Taycan is definitely being discontinued. Even so, the rumour would line up with the direction Porsche has taken over the past year, as the company’s operating profit fell sharply from €5.64 billion ($6.62 billion) in 2024 to €413 million ($485 million).
Since then, the manufacturer has delayed or altered parts of its EV strategy, renewed its focus on combustion-engined and hybrid models, scaled back its battery ambitions, and started reducing product complexity. Leiters has also specifically said Porsche would reduce the number of Taycan variants rather than end the entire model line straight away.
Ending the Taycan would represent a major symbolic U-turn for the brand, considering it was Porsche’s first dedicated EV. However, if the business case never justifies a new generation or a move to Leipzig, symbolism alone is unlikely to settle the matter.
