Interim relief to Rahul Gandhi in disproportionate assets case, Supreme Court stays High Court hearing

New Delhi. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday got interim relief from the Supreme Court in the case to allegations of disproportionate assets. The Supreme Court has currently stayed the next hearing to be held on August 20 in Allahabad High Court. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the concerned parties including the complainant, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the petition of Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi had challenged the order of Allahabad High Court

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has challenged in the Supreme Court the order of the Allahabad High Court, in which the court had given liberty to the CBI and ED to take appropriate action under the law to investigate the allegations of disproportionate assets leveled against him. The Supreme Court has asked both the investigating agencies and other officials not to file any report in this matter before the Allahabad High Court at present.

The Supreme Court has also asked the Allahabad High Court to postpone the proposed hearing on August 20 until the Supreme Court hears further in the matter. However, this is an interim arrangement and the final decision in the case will be taken at a later hearing.

The date of hearing will be decided after the response of the concerned parties.

After the order of the Supreme Court, at present the report to the investigation of the case cannot be filed in the Allahabad High Court and the hearing on August 20 has also been postponed. The Supreme Court will now hear Rahul Gandhi's petition further and after receiving the replies of the concerned parties, the next direction in the case will be decided.

What is this matter?

This matter is to Karnataka BJP worker S. Vignesh is to the complaint made by Shishir. The complainant has alleged that Rahul Gandhi has more assets than his declared income and there is a need for investigation in this regard. While hearing the case in May, the Allahabad High Court had said that if a complaint has been received against Rahul Gandhi and serious allegations have been made in it, then the veracity of the allegations should be investigated. The High Court had said that CBI or ED are free to take appropriate action as per law. The court had also asked it to be informed about the progress of the investigation.
