Manchester United are getting ready to take another major decision involving their academy, with highly rated left-back Harry Amass potentially set for a permanent exit from Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts. The 19-year-old has for some time been viewed as one of United’s brightest young defenders and already has senior-level experience, but regular first-team chances are still not easy to promise.
Following loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City last season, United now seem prepared to sell him rather than sanction another simple temporary move.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are intensifying efforts to bring in funds through academy departures, and Amass could be available for around £7 million plus add-ons.
The latest update indicates that a permanent move away is becoming more and more likely.
The Sun has reported that Norwich are still keen on taking Amass back to Carrow Road, but United would want at least an obligation to buy if any fresh loan deal is put on the table.
Amass made a strong impression during the first half of last season at Sheffield Wednesday before joining Norwich in January.
His spell with the Canaries was unfortunately interrupted by a hamstring injury he suffered soon after arriving.
There is a financial rationale behind United’s approach. Sales of academy players can generate useful transfer income, and Amass needs regular senior football rather than spending another season behind more experienced options.
Even so, £7m appears a relatively low figure for a 19-year-old left-back who has already featured in the Premier League.
United have faced this issue before, with young defenders leaving for modest fees and then seeing their value rise sharply elsewhere. That should make the club especially cautious about giving up long-term potential for what would be a fairly limited immediate return.
A sale could still be sensible if United insert a buy-back clause or a significant sell-on percentage.
That would give Amass the chance to continue his development elsewhere while also safeguarding United’s position if he goes on to become a top Premier League defender.
Norwich’s interest offers a realistic pathway, but United should not move too quickly simply because they are looking to raise money.
