Skoda Superb Launch : Automobile Desk: The premium sedan segment in the Indian automobile market is once again going to witness a big change. Skoda is planning to re-introduce its flagship sedan Superb in India with a new avatar and diesel engine. This luxury sedan can be launched on Indian roads by the first half of the year 2027. The most important thing is that after the implementation of BS6 emission standards in the year 2020, Skoda had completely stopped the sale of diesel vehicles in India. In such a situation, if this model is launched, it will be the company's first diesel-powered vehicle in the country.
In the Indian market, the new Skoda Superb will be sold as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), i.e. completely imported. Since it will be imported directly from abroad, heavy custom duty will be imposed on it. Auto experts estimate that its ex-showroom price could be between Rs 55 lakh to Rs 60 lakh. Although this price is higher than its older models, the availability of diesel engine in the sedan segment will make it different from directly competing petrol and hybrid vehicles.
During the recently held 'Bharat Mobility Show', Skoda had showcased the Superb equipped with diesel engine. The model displayed was provided with a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, which is capable of generating a maximum power of 193 hp and a torque of 400 Newton-meters. This powertrain was paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. However, whether the same exact tuning and all-wheel-drive setup will be available in the Indian-specification model to be launched in 2027 is yet to be officially confirmed.
Skoda Superb 2.0-litre TDI engine is currently available in two different tuning options in the international market. The first variant generates 150 HP power and 360 Nm torque, while the second variant generates 193 HP power and 400 Nm torque. 7-speed automatic transmission is available as standard in both variants. The main draw of the diesel engine is its low-end torque and excellent highway fuel-efficiency (mileage), making it more practical than petrol variants for drivers traveling long distances.
The new Superb is quite grand in terms of design and dimensions. Its overall length is approximately 4.9 metres, which gives it excellent legroom and shoulder room inside the cabin. Apart from this, the car has a huge boot space of 645 litres, which is more than many premium SUV vehicles in the segment. The cabin of the global model has been taken care of with modern features, which include ventilated and massage function seats, large infotainment touchscreen, fully digital instrument cluster, matrix LED headlights and several Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
After returning to the Indian market, the new Skoda Superb will compete directly with established premium sedans like Toyota Camry. While Toyota Camry works on petrol-hybrid technology, Skoda Superb will try to attract customers on the basis of its powerful diesel engine, more cabin space, excellent boot capacity and long-distance driving comfort.
