Fabrizio Romano has removed his X/Twitter post which had stated that Marcus Rashford would wear the No.14 shirt next season, fuelling suggestions that INEOS may have changed course on the decision.

In Manchester United’s pre-season meeting with AC Milan on Saturday, which marked the forward’s first appearance in a Red Devils shirt since December 2024, Rashford wore the No.9.

In any case, clarity over his squad number will need to be finalised this week because United begin their 2026/2027 Premier League campaign on Saturday afternoon.

The No.10 shirt Rashford had worn from August 2018 until his exit to Aston Villa in February 2025 has already been taken by 2025 summer arrival Matheus Cunha.

Cunha made a strong impression in his debut season, registering 10 goals and four assists across 35 appearances for the club.

Even though Rashford featured at the weekend, there is still no certainty that he will remain at Old Trafford for the full season.

It is understood that United’s hierarchy would be open to sanctioning his departure before the transfer deadline if an acceptable bid is received.

Yet any such move would leave the club with very little time to bring in a replacement, especially with one attacking option, Crysencio Summerville, having already joined Al Hilal.

For now, Michael Carrick is said to be very pleased to have the 28-year-old in his squad ahead of his first full season as manager, and the reasons are obvious; Rashford produced an outstanding return of 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona during his loan spell.

That is why it was such a surprise when the Blaugrana decided not to trigger his £26 million purchase option, choosing instead to spend a huge £69.3m on Anthony Gordon and later £19m on Karim Adeyemi.
