Mumbai: Tata Sons is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, with several key issues expected to dominate discussions, including the company's future leadership, governance structure and ongoing concerns linked to Tata Trusts.

The biggest focus is likely to be the search for a successor to N Chandrasekaran, whose tenure as Tata Sons Chairman has been closely associated with the group's expansion across technology, aviation, automotive and consumer sectors.

Who Will Become The Next Tata Sons Chairman?

The selection of Chandrasekaran's successor is expected to be one of the most important issues surrounding the Tata Group's future. The decision will determine the next phase of India's largest business conglomerate.

Sources indicate that Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, may play a significant role in the leadership transition process. Reports suggest Noel Tata recently held meetings in New Delhi, adding to speculation around the succession discussions.

AGM Faces Quorum Concerns

Apart from leadership matters, the AGM may also face procedural challenges to quorum requirements.

The two key Tata Trusts Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) are required to jointly nominate a representative for the meeting. Any delay in reaching an agreement could impact the proceedings.

833 Tata Sons Shares Transfer Row Under Scanner

Another major issue linked to the Tata Group is the controversy surrounding the transfer of 833 Tata Sons shares from Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust to industrialist Naval H Tata in 1989.

The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner is examining questions to the transaction, including the process followed and whether all required procedures were fulfilled at the time.

Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata has maintained that the transfer was carried out legally and complied with the rules applicable in 1989.

Legal Opinion Raises Questions, Tata Trusts Deny Allegations

An external legal opinion by retired Supreme Court judge and former NCLAT Chairperson Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya reportedly questioned aspects of the share transfer.

The opinion suggested that the transaction may have violated certain legal and fiduciary requirements. However, the assessment is only an external legal opinion and does not represent any final judicial or regulatory finding.

Tata Trusts has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that the transaction was lawful. The Charity Commissioner's final decision on the matter is still awaited.

Tata Group's Future Roadmap In Focus

The AGM comes at a crucial time for Tata Sons as the conglomerate prepares for its next phase of growth. From leadership succession to governance reforms, decisions taken around the meeting could shape the future direction of the Tata Group.
