Under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann government, Punjab will get 1,279 new government buses, the biggest fleet expansion in 20 years: Harpal Singh Cheema

Chandigarh: The Punjab Government is making continuous efforts to improve and expand public transport facilities in rural areas. In this direction, Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has announced that by mid-September this year, 100 world class 'PRTC Junior' buses will be officially included in the fleet of PRTC (Pepsu Road Transport Corporation).

The announcement was made after a detailed review meeting with senior officials of the transport department. In the meeting, discussions were held on expanding public transport facilities, upgrading infrastructure and improving services. The minister said that these fully ready midi buses are being manufactured and delivered by Eicher.

Emphasis on increasing the quality of public transport

During the review meeting, Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema directed the officials of the department to work on new and better ideas to further improve the quality of public transport services. He also stressed on strengthening the financial position of PRTC and PUNBUS as well as exploring new sources of income to maintain long-term operations.

1,279 new buses will join the government bus fleet

Referring to the efforts being made by the government to strengthen the public transport system in the state, the Minister said that 1,279 new buses are being added to the government bus fleet.

“This will increase the number of government buses from 2,267 to 3,546. This is the biggest increase in government buses in the last 20 years and an important step towards making Punjab a leading state in the country,” he said.

15 premium buses started for Delhi airport

The Transport Minister said that the Bhagwant Mann government is also working on providing better connectivity for NRIs, international travelers and the general public. He said that under this scheme, 15 premium airport buses, including Volvo coaches, have been started from Jalandhar and Ludhiana to Delhi Airport. The Minister said that this initiative has provided better facilities to the passengers and has also helped in reducing the influence of transport mafia. This has made travel more convenient and easier for the common people.

These officers were present in the review meeting

Many senior officials of the Transport Department participated in the review meeting. These included Transport Secretary Varun Roojam, PUNBUS Managing Director Rajiv Kumar Gupta, PRTC Managing Director Manisha Rana, PRTC Additional Managing Director Navdeep Kumar and PRTC Chandigarh General Manager Amanveer Tiwana.
