Retirement Options – Withdrawal Timelines: When building a retirement fund or a long-term portfolio, we often focus solely on interest rates or expected returns. However, in an emergency, the most critical question is: how quickly does the money reach your bank account after submitting a redemption or withdrawal request?
While some options facilitate fund transfers within 24 to 48 hours, others can take weeks. According to Jasmeet Singh, Executive Director at Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, "It is essential to understand the distinction between liquid and illiquid instruments, as not every investment is designed for immediate liquidity."
Let us examine the withdrawal timelines and rules for India's four most popular investment options: EPF, NPS, PPF, and Mutual Funds.
1. Mutual Funds: Fastest and Easiest Withdrawal (1 to 3 days)
If you require funds immediately and without conditions, open-ended mutual funds prove to be the best option. Funds from liquid and overnight schemes are credited either on the same day or by T+1 (the next working day), depending on the cut-off time. Proceeds from equity and other debt funds typically reach the bank account within 1 to 3 working days (T+1 to T+3).
No specific reason (such as illness, marriage, or education) is required to withdraw money from these funds. However, since they are market-linked, there is an inherent risk of NAV (Net Asset Value) fluctuations.
2. NPS (National Pension System): T+2 Settlement Timeline
The claim processing timeline for the National Pension System (NPS) has been significantly improved. Since September 2022, the PFRDA has reduced the timeline for NPS exit withdrawals from T+4 to T+2 (two settlement days). However, rules regarding the purchase of an annuity also apply to the overall fund transfer process.
You can withdraw a maximum of 25% of your own contribution from the NPS Tier-1 account. Specific reasons (such as illness, housing, or children's education) are mandatory for this.
3. Employees' Provident Fund (EPF): Timeframe of 3 to 20 days
Under the new Employees' Provident Fund Scheme, 2026 (effective June 2026), the EPFO has tightened and expedited claim settlement rules. A statutory timeframe of 20 days has been set for settling claims found to be completely valid. If a delay exceeding 20 days occurs without a valid reason, compensation at an annual interest rate of 12% may be recovered from the Commissioner's salary. Eligible claims are settled within 3 to 5 days through online and automated systems.
Partial withdrawal from the EPF is possible only for specific reasons such as medical needs, marriage, housing, etc. If there are issues with Aadhaar-UAN linking or employer verification, the disbursement of funds may take 2 to 3 weeks.
4. Public Provident Fund (PPF): No guaranteed T+2 timeline
There is no centralized online T+1 or T+2 system for withdrawals from the Public Provident Fund. After applying, funds are credited to the account within 2 to 5 working days, depending on the internal processes of the bank or post office. Partial withdrawal from PPF is permitted only once a year after the completion of five financial years and is limited to a specific portion of the eligible balance.
Key advice from experts
Relying on a single investment instrument when building a retirement portfolio can be risky. Jasmeet Singh of Anand Rathi Wealth advises, "Investors should maintain an emergency fund covering at least six months of expenses in easily accessible options—such as liquid mutual funds or bank fixed deposits—so that long-term investments in EPF, PPF, or NPS do not have to be prematurely liquidated during times of uncertainty."
