Arsenal spent heavily to sign Viktor Gyokeres last summer, but the striker could already be heading towards another move.
Barcelona are reportedly considering a transfer approach for Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres.
The Sweden international arrived at the Gunners from Sporting for a reported £55m, with a further £8.5m possible in add-ons, last summer.
However, only a year into his five-year deal, Gyokeres’ long-term future at Arsenal now appears uncertain.
Three straight second-place finishes in the Premier League — and especially a decline in Arsenal’s goalscoring numbers in 2024/25 — had prompted many supporters to urge the club to bring in a centre-forward of Gyokeres’ quality.
Yet Gyokeres went from being a regular starter to increasingly being used off the bench once Kai Havertz made a proper return from injury in March, even though the Swede had finally put together a consistent goalscoring run.
Mikel Arteta has repeatedly preferred Havertz to Gyokeres in Arsenal’s biggest matches since the German’s comeback, and that decision has paid off.
Havertz was selected and found the net in what could have been a title-defining game against Manchester City in April.
He then started the Champions League final against PSG and scored the opening goal, while Gyokeres was introduced from the bench in the 66th minute. Arteta again chose Havertz in his starting XI for Sunday’s season-opening clash against City in the Community Shield.
Gyokeres has not looked convincing in Arsenal’s pre-season friendlies since returning from the World Cup, attracting criticism over his poor first touch and finishing. For whatever that is worth, which is not much, but still.
Now, according to El Chiringuito, Barcelona could hand Gyokeres an opportunity to win back regular starts.
Barca have been left frustrated in their attempts to lure Julian Alvarez away from Atletico Madrid this summer and are now said to be exploring alternative options.
Gyokeres is believed to be one of those names, and Fabrizio Romano has said that although Barcelona have not yet submitted an offer to Arsenal, the move could gather pace over the next couple of weeks.
The summer transfer window in both England and Spain will shut at 11pm UK time on Tuesday, September 1.
