Punjab Police foils plot to attack police station; IED recovered in Amritsar

Chandigarh/Amritsar. In a major success in its endeavor to make Punjab a safer state as per the guidelines of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Amritsar Rural Police foiled a terrorist plot to target a police station on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The packet contained an improvised explosive device (IED) weighing 690 grams, along with an electronic detonator, battery, timer and an iron box were also recovered.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that after the seizure, the explosive material was handled as per security protocols and defused by the bomb disposal squad. “Amritsar Rural Police has foiled the conspiracy of anti-national elements and averted a potential threat to public safety,” he said.

The DGP said that further investigation is underway to identify and arrest the people behind this conspiracy.

Giving details about the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said that in view of the Independence Day, checking had already been intensified at the check points and a strict vigil was also being maintained at government places.

He said that in this regard, on the night of August 15-16, 2026, when ASI Kulbir Singh was on night patrol, a suspicious black-coloured, wax-wrapped packet was found in the jurisdiction of Police Post Gaggomahal. He said that upon investigation, a suspected IED was found along with an electronic detonator, a battery, a timer and an iron box.

The SSP said the bomb disposal squad was called to the spot and the explosive material was safely destroyed on the spot, while the remaining items were taken into police custody. In this regard, FIR No. 162, dated 30th May, has been registered at Police Station Ramdas, Amritsar Rural under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
