Lifestyle Desk – Since childhood, many of us must have been scolded at home for cracking our fingers. Many people like the 'cut-cut' sound that comes when the joints of the fingers are bent and gradually it becomes a habit. Some people crack their fingers repeatedly due to stress or boredom, while some people keep doing so without any particular reason. But the question is whether cracking fingers for a long time causes damage to the joints or can lead to arthritis in the future? Let us know about it in detail.

Why does sound come when fingers are snapped?

The joints of our fingers are connected to a special kind of fluid filled space, which is called synovial fluid. This fluid helps lubricate the joints and make them move easily. When the finger is stretched or bent in a certain way, the pressure inside the joint changes rapidly. This causes a gas- phenomenon in the synovial fluid, commonly referred to as 'cavitation'. It is due to this process that a crackling sound is heard. This does not mean that every time the sound is made, the bones are rubbing together or breaking. Under normal circumstances, this sound is to changes occurring within the joint.

Does cracking fingers cause arthritis?

The direct link between cracking fingers and osteoarthritis has not been strongly supported by scientific studies. That is, it would not be correct to consider only the habit of cracking fingers as a direct cause of arthritis. For many years, there has been a belief about this habit that it can lead to arthritis in the joints with increasing age, but the available research does not prove this claim. Therefore, if a person cracks his fingers for a long time and does not have any pain or other problem, then there is no need to panic about the possibility of arthritis just because of this habit.

When can there be trouble again?

Although cracking your fingers is not thought to cause arthritis, pulling your fingers too forcefully or in an unusual way is not a good idea. If there is pain, swelling or difficulty in moving the finger while doing this, then it should not be ignored. It is better to consult a doctor if you feel a persistent cracking sound or instability in the joint after any injury.

Additionally, if cracking fingers has become a recurring habit during times of stress or anxiety, it may be useful to understand the trigger behind it. Taking deep breaths, stretching your hands, or concentrating on another activity can be helpful to reduce stress.

Is it necessary to give up the habit?

If cracking your fingers does not cause pain or swelling, then there is no need to be unnecessarily afraid about it. However, it is not advisable to do anything repeatedly and forcefully. Especially if there is already an injury or joint problem in the fingers, it would be better to avoid this habit.
