Patna: The state government has filed its reply in the Supreme Court regarding the questions raised on the police action during the student movements in Bihar. Let us tell you, the government rejected the allegations of excessive and inappropriate use of force on the police and said that action was taken according to the situation to control the protesters.
Referring to an incident that took place in Siwan, the government said that during the demonstration, a policeman was surrounded by the crowd. During this, to protect himself, he fired four rounds in the air from his AK-47. According to the government, no protestor or other person was hurt in this firing.
Use of weapons like AK-47 declared wrong
However, Bihar Police admitted that the use of weapons like AK-47 was not appropriate in normal law and order situation. Considering this against the departmental rules, the concerned constable has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against him. According to the police department, AK-47 is used for special operations rather than general crowd control. Necessary guidelines have also been issued by the DGP in this regard.
Aerial firing also took place from 9-MM pistol
The affidavit also mentions another incident that took place near Hathi Chowk. According to the government, to bring the situation under control, an ASI fired twice in the air with his 9-MM pistol. During this period, three agitators suffered minor injuries. The government said that these injuries were not to the firing from the AK-47, as the injured people were not present at the place where the AK-47 was fired. Scientific and ballistic reports in the case are still awaited.
Claim of unruly elements behind the violence
The state government said that initially the student demonstration was peaceful, but later some unruly elements joined the crowd. After this, incidents like stone pelting and vandalism took place. According to the government, about 157 policemen and 7 other government employees were injured in the violence.
According to the affidavit, between 22 and 25 July 2026, 69 FIRs were registered in the state and around 500 people were arrested. Following the Supreme Court's direction, 222 student protesters with no criminal history were released on bail, while 75 juveniles were released under the Juvenile Justice Board process.
