Frogwares has released The Sinking City 2 on PlayStation 5, taking its Lovecraftian horror series in a new direction. While the original game focused heavily on open-world investigation and detective work, the sequel places greater emphasis on combat, exploration and survival. The game features a standalone story set in Arkham, so players do not need to have played the original. A mysterious flood has engulfed the city, forcing most residents to evacuate and leaving behind a small group of survivors alongside the eldritch creatures brought by the flood.
The Sinking City 2 Shifts Toward Survival Horror
Frogwares began developing The Sinking City 2 in 2023 with the intention of changing the series’ gameplay approach. The sequel is built as a semi-open-world survival-horror game, making combat, exploration and survival more prominent than they were in the original. Investigation remains part of the game, but players can choose whether to pursue it. Those who investigate Arkham’s mysteries can gain useful knowledge, resources, shortcuts and other rewards. The developers have also created different types of enemies with distinct behaviors, making combat encounters an important part of exploring the flooded city.
Five Lovecraftian Threats Await Players
Frogwares has highlighted five creatures that players will encounter in the game: the Slither, Stygian Harvester, Acheronian Juggernaut, Lethian Revenant and Deep One Raider.
The Slither are worm-like deep-sea parasites that can range from finger-sized creatures to worms roughly as long as an arm. Individually, they have limited intelligence, but colonies can form a hive mind capable of controlling human corpses in service of Yog-Sothoth. The parasites manipulate muscles from inside their hosts, resulting in dislocated shoulders and unnatural movements. There are also two stages of Slither infestation, with their appearance and behaviour changing as the colony develops.
The Stygian Harvester is smaller and more fragile than some other enemies but relies on speed and ambushes. It can dodge attacks, hide and retreat before returning to strike. The creature moves using long human arms that end in hands, allowing it to squeeze through narrow spaces and cling to its surroundings. It also prefers darkness, using shadows and poorly lit areas to remain concealed.

The Acheronian Juggernaut returns from the original game and has been redesigned for the sequel. The massive creature appears to consist of several bodies fused together, with six arms, six legs and a huge mouth extending through its torso. It can swallow an entire human body and is extremely powerful and resilient, although its size makes it relatively slow. While its visual design remains familiar, its attacks and behaviour have been redesigned for The Sinking City 2.
The Lethian Revenant is a human transformed into a humanoid Wylebeast. Its head splits open vertically, allowing it to launch blobs of bacterial fluid at players from a distance. The creature tends to rely on ranged attacks and cover rather than direct confrontation. Frogwares also rebuilt its model and textures for the sequel, redesigning its wounds with torn skin, exposed muscle and dark pus.
The Deep One Raider is a humanoid, fish-like creature capable of surviving on land for extended periods. It is described as biologically immortal, with death coming only through violence or accident. The Raider is primarily a close-range threat, using its physical strength and powerful claws. Its movement can also be unpredictable, allowing it to dodge, move on all fours and suddenly charge at the player.
The Sinking City 2 Is Out Now on PS5
The Sinking City 2 is now available on PlayStation 5, offering a standalone Lovecraftian survival-horror experience. The game was developed by Frogwares while the studio continued operating in Ukraine during the war. Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding development, the team has now brought its latest horror title to players. With its semi-open-world structure, optional investigation system and varied collection of Lovecraftian creatures, the sequel expands the series beyond its original detective-focused formula while retaining its distinctive horror setting.
Conclusion
The Sinking City 2 marks a significant change for Frogwares’ horror series, moving towards survival, combat and exploration while keeping investigation as an optional feature. Its standalone story places players in a flooded Arkham populated by survivors and eldritch creatures. The five highlighted enemies bring different combat styles and threats, from the parasite-controlled Slither and ambush-focused Stygian Harvester to the returning Acheronian Juggernaut, ranged Lethian Revenant and powerful Deep One Raider. With the game now available on PS5, players can experience Frogwares’ latest Lovecraftian horror adventure without needing to play the original.
