Airtel Payments Bank New CEO : There is going to be a big change in the leadership role of Airtel Payments Bank. Sunil Bharti Mittal will step down as non-executive chairman of the bank on September 30, 2026. He will also step down from the board of directors of the bank on the same day. After this, Shabnam Sinha will take over as the new chairman of the bank from October 1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved his tenure of three years. This change is happening at a time when there is more focus on digital banking and financial inclusion. Airtel Payments Bank is also entering the next phase of its development.
The new CEO will assume responsibility from October 1
Shabnam Sinha will be the Chairperson of Airtel Payments Bank from October 1, 2026. His tenure will be three years. She is currently working as an independent director on the bank's board of directors. Sinha also serves as the Chairperson of the Bank's Fraud Monitoring Special Committee. She is also a member of the Risk Management and IT Committees.
Ten years tenure of Sunil Mittal
Sunil Bharti Mittal was appointed as the Non-Executive Chairman of Airtel Payments Bank in April 2016. During his nearly decade-long tenure, the bank expanded into both urban and rural areas. A large network of banking points was also established and the bank reached millions of customers across the country.
Recalling his tenure, Mittal said it was an honor to see how an initiative focused on accessibility transformed into an organization serving millions of customers across the country. He hoped that Shabnam Sinha would build on the strong foundations of Airtel Payments Bank and take it to the next stage of growth.
Shabnam Sinha has three decades of experience
Shabnam Sinha has over three decades of experience in development finance, financial services, public policy and organizational transformation. He has also worked in the World Bank. During his tenure at the World Bank, he advised governments and institutions in Asia, Africa, and Europe on matters to governance, risk management, and operational effectiveness. This international experience will play an important role in his new role on the Board of Directors of Airtel Payments Bank.
The focus will be on digital financial services
New Chairperson Shabnam Sinha said digital financial services are becoming an important part of India's inclusive growth story. He said he will work closely with the board and management to take the bank's current momentum forward. He will focus on increasing the availability of banking services to customers and communities. Digital banking and financial inclusion are expected to remain key priorities for Airtel Payments Bank in the future as well.
