Galle, India (AP) — Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has created history in Test cricket. Pant smashed two sixes during his blistering 66-run knock in the second innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle to reach 100 sixes in Test cricket. He became the first Indian batsman and the fastest batsman in the world to achieve the feat.
He reached the milestone of 100 sixes in 51 Tests.
Pant reached 100 sixes in just 51 Test matches and 89 innings. This record is also remarkable in terms of balls. He achieved this feat in 4,918 balls, while the previous record was held by Adam Gilchrist. Pant is now only the fourth batsman in the world to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. Before him, Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum, and Adam Gilchrist have achieved this feat. Stokes has 138 Test sixes, and McCullum has 107, while Gilchrist is also in the 100-six club. Rishabh Pant’s Test career also began with a six. In the first innings of his Test debut against England in 2018, he opened his account with a six off the second ball. Now, by reaching 100 sixes in Test cricket, he has set another example of his aggressive batting style.
The speed of sixes will increase further from 2025
Since the start of 2025, Pant has hit 32 sixes in 16 Test innings. This includes 26 sixes in 13 innings played in 2025. He hit at least one six in seven consecutive Test innings during this period, which is the joint longest such streak. Pant’s bat also performed brilliantly during the tour of England, where he hit 17 sixes in seven innings.
Most aggressive against spinners
Of Pant’s 100 Test sixes, 76 have come against spin bowlers. He has hit nine sixes each against Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir, seven against Nathan Lyon, and six each against Keshav Maharaj and Ajaz Patel. In Test cricket, Pant averages a six every 49.34 balls. His aggression is even greater against spin, where he averages a six every 27.37 balls.
Will Pant be able to break the record of most Test sixes?
Ben Stokes currently holds the record for most sixes in Test cricket, having hit 138. Pant now has 100 sixes. If his current pace continues, he could challenge Stokes’ record in the future. Pant’s achievement in the Galle Test is also significant for Indian cricket, as he has become the first Indian batsman to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket.
