Demand for the Toyota GR GT is said to be surprisingly strong. In fact, interest appears to be high enough that Toyota believes it will not be able to deliver a car to every buyer who wants one.

A fresh report has gone into the specifics of how many GR GT units are being set aside for the United States, and the picture suggests that some prospective customers may be left disappointed. “We’re not going to have enough to meet demand, and that’s by design,” said Andrew Gilleland, Toyota’s senior vice president of automotive operations.

Gilleland further said that the U.S. is expected to get around 200–250 GR GTs, and he told the publication that “the first allocation is already sold.” That reference to a first allocation suggests it may still be possible for interested buyers to secure one later on. Even if the initial batch of 200 to 250 cars has already been spoken for by customers who are interested or have already paid, it would not be surprising if Toyota eventually builds more than it is currently planning.

During The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, Gilleland said more than 150 potential buyers sat down with company representatives to configure their GR GT. Toyota also intends to be selective about who gets to buy the car. “It’s a passion project, and made because Akio [Toyoda] wants a world-class performance car,” Gilleland said. “We don’t want to sell cars to flippers, we only want people who are going to drive it.”

Other carmakers have taken a similar approach with limited-production models. Ford notably required GT buyers to apply for the chance to purchase one, and also made them sign a no-sale agreement that prevented them from selling the car during the first two years of ownership. That approach reportedly created problems for John Cena. Toyota did not explain how it plans to stop flippers from making a quick profit on the GR GT, but it would be surprising to see measures as strict as Ford’s.

Toyota also shared more information about the GR GT during this year’s Monterey Car Week, offering a closer look at the technology packed into the supercar. And if you are interested in buying a GR GT, it would be wise to move sooner rather than later.
