This stellar streak spans from October 2024 all the way to the 2-0 victory over Malaysia in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinal last Saturday.
Vietnam’s last defeat was a 1-2 loss to Thailand in a friendly match on Sept. 10, 2024. One month later, the team began the unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw against India on Oct. 12, followed by 22 matches without a single loss.
During this streak, the team recorded 20 wins and three draws. They scored a total of 61 goals while conceding only 10. This run included 19 matches against Southeast Asian opponents and four against South Asian teams, specifically India, Bangladesh, and Nepal twice.
In 2024, Vietnam remained unbeaten in seven matches. They secured a 1-1 draw with India and victories over Laos (4-1), Indonesia (1-0), the Philippines (1-0), Myanmar (5-0), and Singapore (2-0 and 3-1). This performance laid the foundation for the unbeaten streak that extended into the following two years.
In 2025, coach Kim Sang-sik’s squad won all eight of their matches. They successfully defeated Thailand (2-1 and 3-2), Cambodia (2-1), Laos (5-0 and 2-0), Malaysia (3-0), and Nepal (3-1 and 1-0). Notably, the 3-0 victory over Malaysia was awarded by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after the opponent fielded seven ineligible naturalized players.
Vietnam continued to maintain their consistent form in 2026. The team defeated Bangladesh 3-0, Malaysia 3-1, Myanmar 4-0 and Timor-Leste 7-0. Following a 0-0 draw with Singapore, they beat Indonesia 3-0, Cambodia 3-1 and Malaysia 2-0.
Even excluding the match awarded as a 3-0 win against Malaysia, the team still went 22 consecutive games without a loss on the pitch, which is a new record regardless.
Previously, Thailand held the best record in Southeast Asia with an unbeaten streak of 21 matches between Dec. 4, 1995 and Sept. 15, 1996. During that period, they recorded 16 wins and five draws.
In Southeast Asia, the longest unbeaten streak for Malaysia and Myanmar both stand at 15 matches.
Malaysia achieved this record between August 1976 and March 1977, recording nine wins and six draws.
Myanmar had two periods where they went unbeaten for 15 matches. The first occurred between September 1964 and August 1966, with nine wins and six draws. The second lasted from December 1970 to June 1971, also consisting of nine wins and six draws.
Singapore’s best record is 14 matches, and they also did it on two occasions. The first ran from April 1993 to December 1995, featuring nine wins and five draws. The second took place between November 2004 and February 2006, with 10 wins and four draws.
Indonesia’s record stands at 11 matches, featuring nine wins and two draws, which was set during the 1960-1961 season.
Vietnam now have the opportunity to extend their record even further in the return leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinal with Malaysia on Wednesday night. This is a record that will definitely not be easy to break in the near future.
