Inter Milan are reportedly edging closer to signing Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, with the Serie A champions keen to strengthen their options in central midfield. The Italian title holders have picked out the academy product as a key target as they look to freshen up their squad for the coming season.

Inter move closer to agreement

As per BBC Sport, Inter Milan are now very close to agreeing a £30m deal for Jones. The Italian side have admired the 25-year-old for a long time and now seem to have made a major breakthrough in talks. Although both clubs are still working through the final details of the transfer, there is increasing belief in Italy that the move will be completed soon.

The Nerazzurri have stayed persistent in their pursuit, having earlier seen their attempts turned away by Liverpool's hierarchy at Anfield. In June, Liverpool rejected a verbal bid of £21.7m from Inter, with the Merseyside club valuing the 25-year-old - who has one year remaining on his current contract - at around £35m. However, the difference in valuation has reduced considerably in recent weeks after continued discussions.

Valuation and market precedents

Liverpool have remained firm over their asking price throughout the summer, demanding a fee that matches Jones's top-level experience and homegrown value. The Reds are still willing to sell the midfielder and are looking for a deal around the £30m package that Inter Milan recently paid to sign Djed Spence from Tottenham.

This is not the first occasion on which the Italian champions have tried to sign the midfielder. Inter had also targeted Jones during the January transfer window, putting forward a loan offer with an option to buy, but Liverpool quickly rejected that proposal.

End of an era at Anfield

For Jones, a switch to San Siro would bring to a close a long and notable chapter on Merseyside. He joined Liverpool's academy at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks to establish himself in the first team. Since making his senior debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2019, he has played 228 matches for Liverpool and scored a number of memorable goals.

The drive for a fresh start comes after a mixed campaign for the homegrown midfielder. While Jones made 49 appearances across all competitions last season, only 18 of those were Premier League starts as he found it difficult to secure a permanent place in Arne Slot's midfield. Despite new head coach Andoni Iraola wanting him to remain, stalled contract negotiations and Jones's wish for a new challenge at Inter have made a summer departure increasingly probable.

The growing English contingent in Italy

Once his move to the Giuseppe Meazza is completed, Jones will join fellow England international John Stones - who recently arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City - along with Spence, who has also made his own summer move from Tottenham.
