Bhavnagar. Four people have died after drinking poisonous liquor in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, while 18 others have been admitted to the hospital. The condition of eight of these people is said to be critical. According to the police, the spurious liquor was brought illegally from Madhya Pradesh and sold in Bhavnagar.
The victims had consumed spurious liquor being sold in the name of a popular brand. Gujarat is a dry state, where the manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor is banned.
Director General of Police (DGP) GS Malik told IANS, “Four people have died in this incident. All police units across the state have been directed to conduct a massive investigation operation.”
The first death occurred on Tuesday evening. After this, one more person died on Tuesday night, while two others died on Wednesday.
According to officials, at least 22 people have been affected by this poisonous liquor. Kartik Makwana (40), Upendra Gohil (25) and Ghanshyamsingh Jadeja (50) have been confirmed to have died due to drinking poisonous liquor.
The postmortem and toxicology report of the fourth deceased, Narendra Yadav, is awaited. All four deceased were residents of Bhavnagar district.
Presently 18 people admitted are being treated in a total of five hospitals including Sir Takht Singhji General Hospital and four private hospitals. Of these, the condition of two patients is very serious, four are admitted in ICU, two are on ventilator and the condition of 10 is said to be stable.
The district administration had received information around 6 pm on Tuesday that the health of four people had deteriorated after consuming illicit liquor at a party organized in Kharkadi village of Ghogha taluka on August 16.
Taking action in the case, Bhavnagar police detained four suspected liquor smugglers on Tuesday night. They are accused of bringing liquor from Madhya Pradesh and selling it in the district.
Bhavnagar Superintendent of Police Nitish Pandey said that 16 police teams have been formed to arrest the accused and investigate the supply chain of liquor.
Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Rural Police has also intensified the investigation as it is suspected that the supply of poisonous liquor had passed through this district.
