Just a few months ago, my colleague Chris Chin to ring in six decades of the Corolla nameplate. At the time, the resulting special edition was solely destined for Taiwan and other South Asian markets.

At the time, he noted that whether the US would receive a similar commemorative treatment had yet to be determined. He didn’t get his hopes up, given how much other remains off-limits to the American market.

Thankfully, Toyota is in fact bringing its celebrations here, too. The automaker just confirmed a 60th Anniversary Special Edition for the US market, and it offers limited availability at a mainstream price point.

Anniversary visual exclusives

That’s because, if nothing else, Toyota’s 60th Anniversary Corolla will be rare. According to the announcement, just 2,500 examples are allocated for the United States for the 2027 model year.

And it’s special for reasons beyond its low production numbers. In keeping with the limited-run status, Toyota has given it choice details to distinguish it from the Hybrid SE.

For instance, around the outside, it’s available in two paint schemes: classic Ice Cap or vibrant Supersonic Red. The former is meant to reference the OG Corolla, while the latter is a 60th Anniversary exclusive.

Moreover, in a nod to its history, Toyota has fitted 18-inch black alloy wheels that were offered at the beginning of the 12th generation. In combination with exclusive Anniversary badging and some “driver-focused sport seats” accented with bright red inserts, it’s a look that’s subtle but intentional for those who know the nameplate.

Naturally, there are plenty of other birthday touches. In addition to unique door sills and floor mats, Toyota has included its upgraded multimedia system.

A statement of hybrid intent?

While Toyota hasn’t made any changes to the Hybrid SE’s powertrain as part of its anniversary efforts, it’s nevertheless worth noting.

After all, the model is, in some ways, the culmination of 60 years of Corolla. Toyota could have marked the occasion using the more powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Instead, it prioritized efficiency with the 1.8-liter and ECVT.

I’m inclined to think that’s somewhat indicative of what’s to come, as the not only heralds radically different styling but also (inevitably) some form of electrification.

Toyota has been pretty open about its hesitation to go full EV, so it’s most likely to be hybrid. Toward that end, the 60th Anniversary Edition makes for a pseudo-inflection point in the Corolla timeline.

Availability and pricing

As of this writing, Toyota has not yet confirmed pricing specific to the 2027 Corolla 60th Anniversary Special Edition. However, the base LE is set to start at $23,325 and the Hybrid SE at $27,615, so it should hopefully arrive under $30,000.
