Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India. US Ambassador Sergio Gore made such comments while standing in Srinagar on Wednesday. Pakistan is angry with his comments. Because of this, the government of Shahbaz Sharif has summoned the US ambassador appointed in Islamabad.
Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized 'disputed territory', which is awaiting settlement as per the relevant UN Security Council recommendations. So Gore's comment is factually incorrect. Pakistan's foreign ministry also said that Jammu and Kashmir is illegally occupied by India. The comments by the US ambassador to India are contrary to facts and longstanding international positions.
Sergio visited Srinagar for the first time on Wednesday. He also met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. This is the first solo visit by a top US representative to the Union Territory after the Pahalgaon attack. Sergio said, “It feels good to be here. It (Jammu and Kashmir) is an important part of India. I am here for the first time. The place is very beautiful.” It should be noted that Pakistan has been carrying out provocative activities in Kashmir for more than half a century. Analysts believe that Gore's comments are a positive message for India at the global level. But Pakistan strongly condemned the US ambassador's comments.
