Monsoon definitely provides relief from the heat, but this season also brings many challenges for the drivers. Problems like slippery roads, waterlogging, low visibility and sudden vehicle breakdown increase during rains. In such a situation, it is very important to keep the car prepared according to the weather and take extra caution while driving. The good thing is that it does not require expensive servicing every time. With some important checks and regular maintenance, the car can be kept safe to a great extent.

– Check tires first – The grip of the car on the road during rain largely depends on the tyres. Worn tires may not be able to expel water adequately, which can increase the risk of hydroplaning. In such a situation, the grip between the tire and the road reduces and the vehicle may go out of control.

Therefore, before the onset of monsoon, check the condition of the tire tread. Keep the air pressure of all tires at the level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. If you notice cracks, unusual wear or damage to your tires, do not ignore them.

– Checking the lights is also important – Visibility can be affected during monsoon due to clouds, heavy rain and low light. In such a situation, it is important for headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, reverse lights and fog lights to work properly.

If any bulb is bad or the headlight cover has become hazy, get it repaired in time. This will not only give you better visibility, but will also make your car easily visible to other drivers.

– Do not ignore brakes and battery – Extra caution is required during braking on wet road. If there is an unusual noise or vibration when braking or the vehicle takes longer to stop than usual, get the brake system checked immediately.

The condition of the battery and its connections is also important in rain. Corrosion on the battery terminals, loose connections or a weak battery may cause the vehicle to suddenly refuse to start. It is better to get the old battery checked in time.

Check essential fluids and AC

The levels of engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and windshield washer fluid should be within specified limits. Lack of any fluid can affect the performance as well as safety of the vehicle. The job of AC is not just to keep the cabin cool during rains. It also plays an important role in removing fog from the windshield. Therefore, definitely check that the AC and defogger are working properly.

Keep rubber seals and emergency kit ready

If there is a defect in the rubber seals of doors and windows, rain water can reach inside the car. This can cause problems like moisture, odor and malfunction in the electrical system. If you notice any cracks or gaps in the rubber beading, get it replaced.
It is also useful to keep essential items like torch, jumper cables, tire inflator, puncture repair kit, tow rope, first-aid kit, reflective warning triangle, mobile charger and umbrella in the car for emergencies.

Be careful on waterlogged roads

The biggest mistake during monsoon is often the haste to take out the vehicle on a waterlogged road. If the depth of water is not estimated, avoid taking the car on such routes. Going into deeper water can cause serious damage to the engine, transmission and electrical systems.
While driving in rain, control your speed, maintain sufficient distance from the vehicle in front and avoid sudden braking or taking sharp turns. Applying gentle braking after passing through water can help remove moisture from the brake system.

Caution is the best security

Safe driving in monsoon does not only depend on the technical condition of the car, but the wisdom of the driver is also equally important. Regular checkups, timely servicing and careful driving not only reduce the chances of vehicle damage, but can also significantly reduce the risk of an accident during rains.

Keep wipers and windshield clean

Clear visibility of the road during heavy rain is very important for safe driving. If the wipers are leaving a film of water on the glass, making noise or not cleaning properly, they should be replaced. Also keep plenty of windshield washer fluid. It is very useful in cleaning the soil and mud that jumps from the road during rains.
