Sports News: American Grandmaster Wesley So won the title of the 2026 Sinquefield Cup held in St. Louis, USA. In the title match, he faced a tough challenge from India's R Praggnananda. After the classical stage both the players were on equal points. After this, rapid playoff and then Armageddon tiebreak was played. Despite the decider being a draw, Wesley So was declared the winner due to the tiebreak rule of black pieces. This is their third title in the Sinquefield Cup.
Praggnanandhaa performed strongly throughout the tournament and came very close to the title, but could not win in the deciding stage. However, despite finishing runner-up, he has secured his place in the finals of the Grand Chess Tour. On the other hand, in the women's Cairns Cup, China's Grandmaster Tan Zhongyi performed brilliantly and won the trophy for the second time.

Praggnananda could not win the match and the match ended in a draw. As a result, Wesley So, playing with the black pieces, was declared the winner.
This decisive tiebreak made the title battle of the entire tournament very exciting. Praggnananda tried hard for the title, but due to the draw in Armageddon, So got the advantage due to the rules.

Apart from Praggnananda, the GCT final will include Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana and Vincent Kaymer. The finals will start from August 22.
This will give Praggnanandhaa another big chance soon after missing out on the title at the Sinquefield Cup. He will look to achieve another big feat this season with his performance in the GCT Finals.
Tan Zhongyi won the Cairns Cup for the second time
In the women's Cairns Cup, Grandmaster Tan Zhongyi of China won the title with 6.5 points. This is his second title in this prestigious tournament.
In the final round, Tan Zhongyi lost against Stavroula Tsolakido. Despite this, she remained at the top position in the tournament. Her nearest rival Alice Lee of America played a draw against Carissa Yip and this result ensured the title for Tan Zhongyi.
Thus, despite the defeat in the final round, Tan Zhongyi took advantage of his lead throughout the tournament and won the Cairns Cup trophy for the second time.

Tan Zhongyi received prize money of US$65,000 after winning the Cairns Cup. Their victory also underlined China's strong performance in the women's tournament.
Despite losing in the final round, Tan had scored enough points throughout the tournament to remain at the top position. The title match between him and Alice Lee remained exciting till the last round.
Alice Lee achieved her first GM norm at the age of 16
The tournament was also memorable for 16-year-old American player Alice Lee in the Cairns Cup. She achieved her first career Grandmaster title by drawing against Carissa Yip in the final round.

However, despite Tan Zhongyi's defeat, the title result remained unchanged due to Alice Lee's draw. Tan topped with 6.5 points and was successful in winning the trophy for the second time.
