  • Possibility of D2D connectivity in future..
  • In the past there were hurdles due to technical and spectrum issues.

Starlink India News: In India satellite The discussion of the internet is likely to get more colorful now. Elon Musk's SpaceX company has once again started an important process to bring Starlink services to the country. It has come to light that the company has filed a new application for its Gen Z satellite network with IN-SPACe, India's space agency. The specialty of this new network is its ability to provide Direct-to-Device i.e. D2D connectivity in the future along with traditional Internet. This means that in some situations, the direct connection to the mobile device through satellite may pave the way.

Starlink back in the fray

Starlink had earlier tried to get permission to start services in India. However, at that time there were some technical issues with the company's large satellite network and issues to the spectrum being used.

Now the company is said to have introduced its Gen 2 proposal in a new way. According to this plan, the satellites will move in Low Earth Orbit at an altitude of about 340 to 615 km above the Earth.

A large network of thousands of satellites

Looking at the size of Starlink's Gen 2 plan gives an idea of how big this network can be. The company is said to be planning to send about 42 thousand satellites into space in the future. However, it is known that permission has been sought for about 30 thousand satellites in India.

Having such a large number of satellites around the earth would increase the ability to reach remote areas. Especially in places where mobile towers or fiber networks are difficult to reach, satellite internet can be useful.

Gen 1 has already received approval

Starlink The Gen 1 network is also important in its journey to India. IN-SPACe approved the company's Gen 1 fleet of 4,408 LEO satellites in July 2025. The main purpose of this network is to provide traditional broadband internet services.

However, Gen 2 seems to be trying to bring more capabilities and new features. D2D technology may further increase the use of connectivity between satellites and mobile devices in the future.

Competition will be intense in India

If Starlink gets entry into India, it will have to compete with big companies. Reliance Jio is preparing the LEO satellite network. Apart from this, Amazon and Eutelsat OneWeb are also involved in this sector.

In such a situation, Starlink's large network of thousands of satellites can give the company a good lead. Gen 2 is likely to be particularly important in terms of coverage and network capacity.

Direct-to-device services are currently a hot topic around the world. The idea behind this technology is to bring connectivity directly to phones with the help of satellite in places where mobile towers are not available.

However, the government will have to consider spectrum, security and regulations while giving final approval to such services in India. Telecom companies also have a separate view on this issue. They say that satellite companies serving direct consumers should also be subject to proper telecom regulations.

Security is a big challenge before the government

Although the benefits of satellite internet are great, there are some serious questions facing the government. National security is the most important issue among them. Since the satellite network is being used from the borders of the country to sensitive areas, it needs to be properly controlled and monitored.

The path forward for satellite internet in India will be clear only after the final decisions on spectrum allocation, security clearances and regulations for D2D services are taken.

Currently, Starlink's new application for Gen 2 is considered to be a milestone for the satellite internet sector in India. If allowed, it can change the picture of many things, from internet in remote areas to direct mobile connectivity. However, it is not yet clear when the actual service will start and how much the customers will have to spend for it.
