Netflix’s recently released critically acclaimed show, Operation Safed Sagar, has introduced the unknown story of the Indian Air Force’s contribution to the 1999 Kargil War. The contributions of the heroes who fought the battle and their families mapped the narrative of the six-episode series. Dia Mirza plays one of the emotional anchors of the show as Wing Commander B S 'Tony' Dhanoa’s wife, Kamalpreet Dhanoa. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, the actress said it was an instant yes for Operation Safed Sagar. Explaining her understanding of patriotism and heroism, Dia shared that the show is a ‘gift’ for the youth.

 told us, “I only choose stories that connect with me. It's always about the story. I was so blown away when I read those six episodes. There is so much I had no idea of, and I'm sure most civilians wouldn't even know. I feel like we don't really value heroism and patriotism. My idea of patriotism is the feeling that I get when I stand and I sing that anthem. The goosebumps that I get. I love that feeling. There's so much more. I don't think we have an iota of an understanding because we've grown up in a free India, right?”

 

She added, “We don't know as civilians what it means to sacrifice. What it really means to be brave. Of course we are brave in different aspects of our lives, but those split-second decisions, the enormity of the conditions of their work and how they perform it with grace and such strong values. I feel like there's so much for people to learn from this story.”

Mirza felt that  released at the right time when India was preparing for its 80th Independence Day. “It is timely because it was released before our 80th Independence Day. What a rich gift for younger people to just watch and see that this is what heroes don't shout; they are real, they’re honest and have integrity. They have values along with them. Also, they put love and peace above all else,” she shared.

Operation Safed Sagar is a six-episode series created for Netflix. Oni Sen is the director. The show also stars Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Amrita Bagchi and Prajakta Koli.
