Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir becomes the new President of Bangladesh, defeats Jamaat candidate Oli Ahmed by a big margin

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has won the Presidential Election by a huge margin. He got 255 votes. While Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance candidate Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed got 88 votes. Chief Election Commissioner and Election Official AMM Nasir Uddin of the Presidential Election announced the results after three hours of voting in Parliament. Voting for the Presidential Election ended at 5:00 pm today.

349 MPs voted

AMM Nasir Uddin said that all 349 MPs cast their votes in three transparent ballot boxes. Of the ballot papers issued, 343 were used and six were unused. Nasir Uddin said all 343 ballot papers used were considered valid. Four ballot papers were changed under Section 10 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991. Three Election Commissioners and the Secretary of the Election Commission were present during voting and counting.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is a powerful leader of BNP.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been the longest serving General Secretary of BNP. He is an MP from Thakurgaon-1 constituency. He is serving as the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in the government led by Tariq Rahman. In his previous tenure, from 2001 to 2006, he was also appointed Minister of State in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and later the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

Political journey of Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

Fakhrul Islam Alamgir became active in student politics from Dhaka University. He was a member of the then East Pakistan Students Union (EPSU). It is now known as Bangladesh Students Union. He was elected general secretary of the SM Hall unit of the organization in the university. Alamgir rose gradually in EPSU and at the height of the 1969 rebellion against the Ayub Khan administration, he was elected as the Dhaka University president of the organisation. In 1972, Alamgir became an economics teacher at Dhaka College.

Have worked in Ziaur Rahman's government

Alamgir served in the administration of President Ziaur Rahman. He worked as secretary to Deputy Prime Minister SA Bari and Minister of State Amirul Islam Kamal. Subsequently, Alamgir taught economics at Thakurgaon Government College and worked as an auditor in the Directorate of Inspection and Audit of the Government of Bangladesh and at UNESCO until 1986.
