Drag i San Antonio Spurs until the NBA Finals is a huge responsibility for a 22 year old, but for Victor Wembanyama wearing the shirt of your national team brings with it a different, almost sacred pressure.

Back with the French national team in preparation for the upcoming FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers, the leader of Les Bleus openly reflected on the symbolic significance of wearing his country’s colors. It is an experience he is having for the first time since the 2024 Paris Olympicswhere France finished with a silver medal.

Wembanyama’s importance to French basketball (after showing flashes late in the season of being the best player in the world) received further confirmation with his official appointment as captain of the national team by new head coach Frédéric Fauthoux.

After sitting out the team’s most recent summer games to rest following a lengthy NBA Playoff run with San Antonio, the French center will return in front of his home crowd for the August 27 matchup against Slovenia.

It will be a crucial test for France, currently sitting atop Group L with a 5-1 recordwhich will first face two high-profile exhibition games against Serbia on Aug. 20 and 23 to help “Wemby” regain his chemistry with the group.

Between an increasingly dominant leadership role in America and his new position as captain at home, Wembanyama’s trajectory continues to move at a breathtaking pace, further confirming that a winning mindset is the true fuel behind this generational talent.
