'He is a Chelsea player' - Xabi Alonso responds to Enzo Fernandez transfer speculation

Xabi Alonso has finally spoken about Enzo Fernandez's future as speculation continues to gather pace around the Argentina midfielder. The Chelsea head coach made it clear that the 2022 World Cup winner remains central to his plans, despite strong links with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Alonso stands firm on Fernandez future

Alonso has attempted to end the ongoing rumours surrounding Fernandez, stressing that the midfielder remains fully committed to the project at Stamford Bridge. The Argentina international, who arrived at Chelsea for £107m in 2023, has been heavily discussed throughout the summer transfer window, with Manchester City reportedly considering a move for the former Benfica player.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference before Chelsea's Premier League opener against Fulham on Monday, Alonso left no doubt over the player's current situation. 'Enzo is a Chelsea player,' Alonso told reporters. 'He's a top, top player. He's training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team, very integrated. We are happy with him and he's getting ready for Monday.'

Addressing the Stamford Bridge reception

The matter has been made more delicate by a cold reaction from some sections of the Chelsea fanbase. During a recent pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad, Fernandez was met with a scattering of boos when his name was read out over the PA system and again when he came onto the pitch.

When asked whether Fernandez had directly said he wanted to stay in West London, Alonso preferred to point towards the player's professionalism in training. 'He's training really well with a good attitude, and that's what we want,' the Spaniard added. 'He's trying his best to prepare for the kick-off of the Premier League.'

The Manchester City interest

Manchester City, now led by former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, have for some time admired Fernandez's technical quality and passing range. Although the Etihad Stadium club did not meet Chelsea's £120m valuation before last Friday's 5pm deadline, the transfer window remains open until September 1. That leaves open the possibility of a late move if all parties are able to reach an agreement.

The midfielder has certainly experienced a dramatic few years on the international stage, playing a major role in Argentina's journey to the World Cup final. Even so, his club future has remained under discussion for months. At Stamford Bridge, Fernandez has grown into an important figure, making 54 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists, while also winning both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup since joining the Blues. In spite of the noise surrounding him, Alonso remains convinced that the player's concentration has not slipped during an important phase of tactical work.

Joao Pedro secures long-term future

While the Fernandez situation continues to attract attention, Chelsea have also tied down forward Joao Pedro for the long term. The Brazilian has signed a new contract and has been given the iconic No. 9 shirt, which was previously worn by Liam Delap. Alonso spoke glowingly about the attacker and pointed to his growing influence as a leader within the squad.

'He's not just a great player, he has a great personality,' Alonso said about the Brazilian. 'His development as a great player and as a leader is very noticeable each day and in each game. He has this focus and desire to have a great season, scoring goals but also helping the team. I'm very happy and impressed with his personality as well. Now, we need to help him reach his goals.'
