Anyone planning to spend around Rs 50 lakh on a compact luxury SUV has a very good reason to wait a few days. BMW will launch the X1 Long Wheelbase on August 21, while the new-generation Audi Q3 is due on August 25.

The timing creates an unusually clean buying decision. BMW is stretching an already familiar SUV to give rear-seat passengers more space. Audi is replacing its Q3 with an all-new third-generation model. Both are expected to sit in roughly the same price band, but they are taking very different routes.

The X1 LWB is 4,616 mm long, 1,845 mm wide and 1,641 mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 2,802 mm. Compared with the regular X1, it is 116 mm longer overall and gains 110 mm between the axles.

Most of that extra length is aimed at the rear seat. The bench sits 27 mm higher and the headrest cushions are 37 mm wider. Boot capacity also grows to 540 litres from 476 litres in the standard X1.

That could make the BMW particularly attractive to owners who are frequently chauffeur-driven or regularly carry adults in the second row. The regular X1 is already practical, but the LWB moves passenger space closer to the centre of the buying argument.

BMW has confirmed local production and opened bookings, but it has not yet confirmed the India-spec engines. The regular X1 currently uses a 134 bhp 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and a 148 bhp 2.0-litre diesel. The China-spec X1 LWB instead gets a 204 bhp 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, but there is no confirmation that this engine is coming here.

The standard X1 currently costs Rs 50.90 lakh to Rs 52.90 lakh, so the LWB is likely to sit above it.

The Q3 arriving four days later is a full generation change. The new SUV gets a redesigned cabin, an 11.9-inch digital instrument display and a 12.9-inch touchscreen. The gear selector has moved to the steering column, freeing up space in the centre console.

Boot capacity is 488 litres, and the rear bench can slide and recline. Globally, the new Q3 also offers advanced Matrix LED lighting, new driver-assistance functions and optional adaptive dampers. Final equipment for the version sold here will only be clear at launch.

The expected powertrain is more certain. The Q3 is set to use a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol making 204 bhp and 320 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive. A 0-100 km/h time of about 7.1 seconds is claimed for this configuration.

Expected pricing is around Rs 50 lakh to Rs 55 lakh, which puts it directly into X1 territory.

If rear-seat space is the first priority, the BMW already has a strong case. Its extra wheelbase, larger boot and locally produced LWB format are tangible advantages.

The Audi looks more appealing for someone who wants the fresher cabin, a stronger expected petrol engine and all-wheel drive. It is also an entirely new-generation product rather than a stretched version of an existing one.

The sensible move, however, is simple. Do not make the decision on August 21. Wait four more days. At this price, four days is a very small cost for knowing both cars’ final prices, standard equipment and engine specifications. Once those numbers are public, the choice should become much easier: X1 LWB for space and rear-seat comfort, or Q3 for the newer package and stronger performance proposition.
