New Delhi: If there are many mobile numbers running in your name then this news is very important for you. The government is now going to strictly enforce the rules regarding the limit of SIM cards. From August 24, telecom companies will have to stop issuing new SIMs to people who already have a fixed number of mobile connections registered in their names. The Department of Telecommunications i.e. DoT has issued a circular in this regard on August 17. In this, companies have been asked to prepare necessary technical arrangements to identify such customers who are trying to take mobile connections more than the prescribed limit.

There is already a limit on the maximum number of SIM cards in India. Normally a person can have a maximum of 9 mobile connections in his name in different telecom companies and circles. However, for Jammu-Kashmir, Assam and North-Eastern states this limit is 6 connections. The new change is not in setting limits, but in strictly enforcing their observance.

Now before getting a new SIM, the information about mobile connections already running in the name of the customer will be checked. It will also be necessary to provide information about other mobile numbers present in your name in the customer application form i.e. CAF. This will also include numbers taken from other operators or any other telecom circle.

This is how the SIM will be checked

Telecom companies will check customer information through the government's Digital Intelligence Platform i.e. DIP. This platform connects customer records from different telecom companies at one place. With this, it will be possible to find out how many mobile connections are already active in the name of a person. From August 23, the facility of photo based identification of such customers who have reached the prescribed SIM limit is also to be started in DIP. Operators will be able to use this information when seeking a new connection. Once the limit is reached, a new number will not be issued.

Companies have time till 30 November

Telecom companies have been given time till November 30 to connect their existing systems with the Digital Intelligence Platform and make necessary changes.

What will happen if more SIMs are issued by mistake?

The government has also decided on an interim process until the new system is fully implemented. If any mobile connection is found active beyond the prescribed limit, it may be immediately suspended for one day until the problem is resolved. DoT says that the purpose of this system is to keep mobile connections within the prescribed limits and ensure proper compliance with the rules.
