Tezzbuzz Desk – If you have more than one mobile SIM card in your name, then this news is very important for you. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is now going to take strict action against those having mobile connections more than the prescribed limit. From August 24, 2026, telecom companies will have to identify such customers and implement a system to stop them from issuing new SIMs. Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) will be used for this.

DoT has issued instructions in this regard on 17 August. Under the new rule, if a person has already taken a mobile connection in his name up to the prescribed limit and after that tries to get a new SIM, then the telecom company will check his information. If the limit is reached, the customer's application for a new mobile connection may be rejected. The customer will also be told that the prescribed number of connections already exists in his name. The limit of having a maximum of 9 mobile connections in the name of one person is already in force in the country. This limit applies to all telecom companies and connections in different service areas. That is, if you have SIM of Airtel, Jio, Vi or any other company, then the total number of all connections will be counted. Whereas in Jammu-Kashmir, Assam and North-Eastern states this limit is of 6 mobile connections.

In the new system, the government will be able to see the information received from different telecom operators at one place through the Digital Intelligence Platform. With this, it will be easy to find out how many mobile connections are active in the name of a person. While getting a new SIM, the customer will have to provide information about all the mobile connections already existing in his name in the Customer Application Form. In this, the number of another telecom company or any other licensed service area will also have to be included. To make this process more effective, from August 23, representative photographs of those customers who have reached the prescribed limit will also be made available on DIP. Telecom companies will use this information while issuing new SIMs. If during investigation, more connections are found in the name of the customer than the prescribed limit, the issuance of a new SIM may be refused.

DoT has given time till November 30, 2026 to telecom companies to fully integrate their systems and processes with DIP. Apart from this, if any mobile connection in the name of a customer exceeds the prescribed limit, it is activated even for a day, then instructions have been given to suspend it immediately, until the situation becomes clear after investigating the matter. The aim of the government is to better monitor the number of mobile connections and ensure that the prescribed limit is followed. Therefore, if you have multiple SIM cards in your name, then definitely check the information of all the numbers once. Especially it is important to have information about those SIMs which are not being used for a long time or which are no longer needed. With this, trouble can be avoided while getting a new mobile connection in future.
