Automobile Desk: While driving a two-wheeler on the road, helmet is not only a means to avoid challan, but also a shield of life. Generally people buy a helmet once and keep using it for years. As long as no major dents or cracks are visible on the outer shell, it is considered that the helmet is completely safe. However, this thinking can prove fatal in a major accident. Like mobiles or vehicles, helmets also have a shelf life i.e. expiry date, ignoring which is very risky.

On the basis of technical and safety standards, the average age of any helmet is considered to be about 5 years from the date of manufacture or start of use. Over time, the protective pads and thermocol (EPS foam) inside it start weakening due to exposure to sunlight, sweat, dust, humidity and temperature changes.

A helmet that looks shiny from outside has completely lost its impact absorption capacity from inside. In such a situation, during any unpleasant incident, the old helmet fails to provide proper protection to the head.

Safety experts believe that if a helmet ever hits the head in an accident or falls from a height onto the hard ground, it should be replaced immediately. Many times, after a fall, there is no mark on the outer plastic or fiber, but micro-cracks appear in the internal structure. In case of an accident again, such a damaged helmet cannot withstand the pressure and breaks easily. Apart from this, loose straps, damaged buckles and lack of proper grip on the head are also direct signs of its being unusable.

Today, lighter and safer helmets with new technology and standards (like BIS or ISI certification) are available in the market. Modern helmets come with features like ventilation systems, anti-fog visors and washable inner padding, which provide comfort to the neck and head during long journeys.

Pulling around an old helmet may seem like a money saver, but it is a direct compromise to safety. When choosing a new helmet, always choose the correct size and authentic safety rating. A strong helmet replaced at the right time becomes a true companion in the journey.
