412 acres of water filled area was made cultivable

Fazilka- The efforts of the Punjab Government to provide permanent relief to the waterlogged areas of Fazilka district and to make farmers' land cultivable again got a boost today when Cabinet Minister Shri Barinder Goyal visited Khuiyan Sarwar and Nakeria villages and congratulated the people and farmers of the area for getting relief from the problem of waterlogged areas.

Two projects of sub-surface drainage system have been completed in village Khuiyan Sarwar. In the first project, water-logged areas of 327 acres have been removed at a cost of Rs 5.38 crore. Similarly, under the second project, 85 acres of land has been made cultivable again at a cost of Rs 2.40 crore. In this way, 412 acres of land in Khuiyan Sarwar has been made cultivable by freeing it from water at a total cost of Rs 7.78 crore.

The work on both the projects was started in May 2026. On this occasion, Minister Shri Barinder Goyal said that the problem of waterlogging has been a serious challenge for the farmers of Fazilka district for a long time. He said that the Punjab government is emphasizing on scientific and permanent solution instead of temporary solution to this problem. Sub-surface drainage system is an effective step in this direction, through which excess water can be removed from the land and it can be made fertile and cultivable again.

He said that a farmer's land is not just property but also the basis of his income, livelihood and future. Therefore, making the waterlogged land cultivable again is one of the top priorities of the government. Meanwhile, another project of sub-surface drainage system is going on in village Nakeriya at a cost of Rs 6 crore 91 lakh. With the completion of this project, 250 acres of waterlogged land will also get relief and farmers will get an opportunity to make better use of their land. The work of this project in Nakeria was also started in May 2026.

The Minister said that the Punjab Government is running several development projects for all-round development of rural Punjab including water-logged areas. He said, “Our aim is not only to solve problems but also to create such infrastructure for the people which will prove beneficial for the coming generations.

“He said that many more development works to roads, irrigation, drainage, drinking water, health, education and other basic facilities are being continuously done by the government, so that the people of villages can get better facilities like in urban areas. Relieving water from 412 acres of land of Khuiyan Sarwar is not just a development project for the farmers of the area, but a major success in making their land fertile again and strengthening farming.
