The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday said it saw no reason to comment on Pakistan's “frustration” after Islamabad summoned a top US diplomat over US Ambassador Sergio Gor's recent remarks describing Jammu and Kashmir as “an important part of India”.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India's position on Jammu and Kashmir, saying the region, along with Ladakh, is an integral part of the country.

“I will repeat, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh are integral and indivisible parts of India. They were, they are, and they will remain so,” Jaiswal said during the MEA's bi-weekly press briefing in the national capital.

“I see no reason to comment on Pakistan's frustration. This is what I have to say,” he added in response to a question on Pakistan's diplomatic protest over Gor's remarks.

What MEA Spokesperson Said On Palestine Visit

On MEA Secretary Sripriya Ranganathan's visit to Palestine, Jaiswal said India had already issued messages, releases and statements regarding the visit.

“She visited Palestine from 18th to 20th (August), so it was a three-day visit,” Jaiswal said.

He said Ranganathan visited Ramallah along with other officers and called on the Prime Minister of Palestine. She also held high-level meetings with the Foreign Minister, Health Minister, Labour Minister and Education Minister of Palestine.

Jaiswal said she also met with the diplomatic adviser to the President of Palestine.

He added that she underscored the importance of addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, including through sustained humanitarian assistance and continued dialogue and diplomacy.

“She conveyed India's commitment to being a strong development partner for Palestine,” Jaiswal said.

Row After US Ambassador Calls J&K ‘Important Part Of India’

During his visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the Union Territory as “an important part of India”. It was his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Gor also said the US would reconsider its travel advisories for the region.

Addressing mediapersons after his meeting, Gor commended the security efforts made by the administration of the Union Territory and the Centre to make Jammu and Kashmir safer. He also indicated that Washington may re-evaluate and “downgrade” its highest-level travel warning for J&K.

“This is an important part of India and so I'm here visiting for the first time. It's an incredibly beautiful place, and so I'm thrilled to be here, thrilled to see this place. We had a very good meeting, and we have some follow-ups that we'll take back to Washington, back to Delhi. But, a very warm, very cordial, and we look forward to building this relationship forward,” Gor had said.

Pakistan Summons US Diplomat

Gor's remarks drew a reaction from Pakistan, which later summoned the US Charge d'Affaires and lodged a protest.

Islamabad said Gor's remarks regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir were “factually incorrect” and contradicted Washington's longstanding position on Kashmir.

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “strongly condemned” the remarks and described them as “irresponsible”.

“It was underscored that Jammu and Kashmir is…awaiting final disposition in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people,” Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed.

It also claimed that the statement “ran contrary to the United States' commitment to supremacy of international law and the UN charter.”

Omar Abdullah Distances J&K From Row

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that Islamabad's summoning of a US diplomat was an issue between Pakistan and the United States.
