Millions of central government employees across the country are currently keeping a close eye on updates regarding the upcoming dearness allowance (DA) hike for July. While discussions around the 8th Pay Commission continue to circulate, employees are primarily awaiting the official announcement of the latest DA revision, which typically occurs twice a year in January and July.

Expected Timeline and Festive Timing

While the January dearness allowance is usually announced by the government around March or April, the July installment is traditionally declared in September or October. However, with the festive season approaching, discussions have intensified regarding whether the central government might announce a hike as a special gift around Raksha Bandhan.

We spoke with financial and employee federation experts to understand the likely timeline and scope of the upcoming revision.

What Do the Experts Say

Any increase in dearness allowance requires formal approval from the Union Cabinet. Until the official implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, DA hikes continue to be governed under the framework of the 7th Pay Commission. Earlier this year in April, the government had raised the dearness allowance by 2 percent, elevating it from 58 percent to 60 percent.

Dr. Manjeet Patel, National President of the All India NPS Employees Federation and National Mission for Old Pension Scheme India, shared his insights on the potential timing:

Projected Hike and Calculations

Based on current trends reflected in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for industrial workers, experts anticipate that the government could announce a hike of 2 to 3 percent.

If the government opts for a 2 percent increase, the total DA will rise accordingly.

If a 3 percent hike is approved based on CPI metrics, the dearness allowance will increase to 63 percent of the basic salary.

An official confirmation and cabinet announcement regarding the exact percentage and effective date are still awaited by employee unions.
