‘Superman’ spinoff ‘Jimmy Olsen & Gorilla Grodd’ gets HBO Max series order

HBO Max has officially ordered eight episodes of The People v. Gorilla Grodda half-hour comedy spinoff of Superman from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television.

Skyler Gisondo and Jimmy Tatro lead the series as Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd, respectively, with the first season told in the style of a true-crime mockumentary.

The story follows Grodd, a superintelligent ape convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.

The Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case in an eight-part “true” crime docuseries, investigating whether Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most notorious murder trials.

The series will also feature several Superman cast members reprising their roles, including Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

New additions include Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd comes from Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creators of Netflix’s American Vandal. The pair serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers, with Yacenda directing all eight episodes.

DC Studios co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are also executive producers. The series centres on Gorilla Grodd, whose psychic abilities and other powers emerged after an encounter with an alien spaceship.
