Tottenham weigh up move for French striker as De Zerbi looks to add attacking depth

Tottenham are weighing up a move for Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta as Roberto De Zerbi aims to bolster his attacking options before the transfer window shuts. The France international has enjoyed an impressive period at Selhurst Park and has established himself as one of the Premier League’s more dependable centre-forwards.

As Spurs review their choices in attack, the 29-year-old has now surfaced as an experienced option who could make an instant impression in North London.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are considering a move for Mateta amid concerns about their current striker options.

The report adds that Spurs want an upgrade in attack and feel Mateta could be available for a fairly reasonable fee because of his contract situation.

His Palace contract is set to run until 2027, which could leave the Eagles with a decision to make if a substantial bid arrives before the deadline.

Mateta’s future has already been uncertain this year. Sky Sports reported earlier in 2026 that his proposed transfer to AC Milan broke down after concerns emerged during his medical, although he was still expected to leave Palace in the summer.

Mateta would not necessarily be the glamour signing some Tottenham fans may be hoping for, but he could still be a very sensible addition.

At 29, Spurs would be signing a striker capable of making an immediate contribution rather than another prospect who needs time to settle. Mateta is physically strong, has Premier League experience and is comfortable operating as a traditional focal point.

That profile could suit De Zerbi particularly well. Tottenham already have plenty of technically gifted attackers, but a powerful striker who can occupy centre-backs would give them another route to break down difficult opponents.

The main concern would be the fee and Mateta’s previous knee issue. Tottenham should avoid overpaying for a player approaching 30, especially when Palace know they are in talks with a Premier League rival.

Even so, Mateta has shown that he can score important goals, including the winner in Palace’s Conference League final victory last season. If Spurs can agree a sensible fee, this may prove to be one of those less eye-catching transfers that ends up being extremely useful.
